About What's New

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications, opening its doors to research in 1986, has evolved into a scientific research center built around a national services facility. In its leadership role, NCSA is developing and implementing a national strategy to create, use, and transfer advanced computing and communication tools and information technologies. These advances serve the center's diverse set of constituencies in the areas of science, engineering, education, and business.

NCSA is also dedicated to improving the competitive position of American industry by selecting leading corporations in a variety of industry categories to partner with NCSA in a non-competitve industrial program. These Fortune 500 companies are at NCSA to learn about all aspects of cutting-edge hardware and software, virtual prototyping, visualization, networking, and databases. Current partners include: American Airlines, AT&T, Caterpillar Inc., Dow Chemical, Eastman Kodak Co., Eli Lilly & Co., FMC, J. P. Morgan, Motorola Inc., Phillips Petroleum Co., Schlumberger Ltd., Tribune Company, and United Technologies.

Since its beginning, NCSA has developed desktop software to help users navigate cyberspace. With the release of the network browser, NCSA Mosaic in 1993, NCSA provided the basis of technology that is generating the enormous "gold rush" on the Internet. Over the next year, NCSA is creating a powerful collaboration environment called NCSA Montage that will help to eliminate distance barriers for virtual teams.

With the launch of Mosaic, NCSA began publishing What's New--one of the first services to announce new World Wide Web sites. In 1994, NCSA and the Global Network Navigator, then a project of O'Reilly and Associates, agreed to co-publish NCSA's What's New. GNN continues to co-publish the list today.

NCSA is a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was established in 1985 with a grant from the National Science Foundation. In addition to NSF grant funds, NCSA receives major funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency, NASA, corporate partners, the state of Illinois, and the University of Illinois.

We encourage announcements to be made via a browser form rather than through email.
