Ron, your best bet is to check e-bay. In fact, as of my posting this I see several copies of Micrografx Webtricity 2 ( which includes PP 8 ) each for under $100. PP 8 is likely going to be the easiest version to find (just be sure to apply the updates if you're going to run on XP).
http://www.kitchencloset.com/realstuff/micrografx_updates/

Alternatively you could track down the free downloadable demo of PP 10 (not DCE edition) and install that. Note that the demo is a time limited version that expires in 30 days, although I recall reading some years ago that there may be a way around it. Unfortunately I don't have that info myself.

Good luck!

HELP! I do a lot with photographic scans of old images. Because it's easy to use, I have been with Micrografx Picture Publisher Ver 8 since purchasing my Plustek UT12 scanner in 2000. Does just what I want it to do, even to this day. HOWEVER .. I lost the Plustek disc which included MFX version 8 and now stuck with it running on an ancient WIN98 machine. I want to load it onto my XP setup but cannot find the original CD. Can anyone suggest a site for a download or does anyone have a copy of cd that I can use? Help would be appreciated. Thank you! Ron.

C-Bus? Cow references probably just date me to not having lived there for so long :P

Anyways, that's an awesome Maiden mash-up though. Thanks for the link! Hope all's well.

Bryan-

I don't think I'll ever forget that trip down to Bogarts to not see Danzig. LOL!
I am a fan of the strange video mash-up, the latest giggle fest for us metal-heads is the mash up of Iron Maiden and the Monkees. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7bAuzNTIBs
BTW, we prefer C-Bus.

Welcome to the Next Pay-For-Emulation Level. At least you have the option to buy it here.

But, I'm still hopeful that Sony will bankrupt their hardware business and cut the PS3 loose by the end of the year.

Songs that make me tense... it's mostly stuff by Brand X off the top of my head when I try to think of a poster child for Jazz Fusion. Try and try and try as I might, i just can't stand that band.

The reason I left off magazines and fanzines is that I was trying to focus more on learning about new music by hearing it. Which has always been the most common way to learn of a new song for most people.

As a fellow archivist I feel for your delima about collecting though and contemplate these issues myself.

Bryan-

I don't know what is next, that is the fun of the future. However, I am looking forward to your entire article on "songs that make me tense."

One venue in the '80s for discovering new music that you didn't touch on was music magazines and fanzines. The internet has reduced the usefulness of print and taken its toll on some good magazines and the ones at are still around aren't exactly thriving (Terrorizer, Decibel) That said, I still buy releases "site-unheard", often from the used bin at the local record store, based on reviews that I have read.

Living in a college town had some advantages in the fact that we had several really good campus record stores (and a good one on the east side, Record Connection) that stocked basically everything. In fact, Magnolia Thunderpussy is still around and doesn't suck for the genre that I love. I buy mostly CDs, but this place still stocks a variety of vinyl. Nothing like the days when it was basically the only format other than cassettes.

I am certainly not the first to observe the fact that physical media and the places that distribute it are going away. I think that the next genre will be one that takes advantage of the not needing physical media or physical presence, perhaps a global ongoing concert that you can tune into passively or take part of yourself. Thousands of monkeys hammering on Garageband at one time. I welcome the cacophonous future, except how the hell do you collect the ephemeral? Time to find a different hobby.
